Brief family/orchard history...
"Greenlands" property was taken up as a virgin block in 1911 – initially growing potatoes and other vegetables and then moving on to apples and pears.
Today, Dodds Orchard Batlow grows quality Batlow Apples and is noted for quality produce in the Sydney Markets.
Dodds Orchard Batlow has always been a family based business. There has been four generations of Apple growers –Laurie, Beth, and Cameron, now manage the orchard. The eldest daughter Liza, runs the administration side of the business, while Stephanie, who worked on orchard establishment, now lives in Canberra ACT.
Three generations of the Dodd family served on the Board of BFC – Joseph (JE), Ted and Laurie.
How long has your family/you been growing Batlow Apples?
Four generations – periodically over 75+ years.
Is there a history to the orchard?
It's 4th generation. Initially grew pears and apples, later removing pears to concentrate on apples. Now have moved to new technology and procedures, including close plantings, dwarf rootstock, hail nets, frost control, water monitoring through Gbug technology, and the continued promotion of Integrated Pest Management.
What varieties do you grow and what is your favourite?
Fuji, Pink Lady, Gala, Red Delicious, Bonza and Sundowner. Favourite is the Fuji.
