Bonza Apples
The Bonza apple originated in Batlow and was cultivated by chance over 30 years ago . The Bonza variety has a green/cream background colour with a 50-60% red blush. The variety is characterised by a very white firm flesh with a sweet flavour, and is particularly good for cutting and in salads as it tends to keep its colour after being cut. Bonzas are available from early March through to early July.

Braeburn Apples
The Braeburn originated in New Zealand by crossing a Lady Hamilton with a Granny Smith . The variety is red-flushed and striped over greenish gold skin. It is a good eating apple with firm, juicy flesh and sweet-tart flavour. The flesh of Braeburns is a pale cream colour, and lends itself well to use in salads and dicing. Braeburns are available from the end of April through to the middle of November.

Fuji Apples
The Fuji apple originated in Japan in the 1940’s and has a crisp, sweet flavour. Fuji apples are round with a dull pink/red colour, and have a dense texture. Fujis are available from mid April through to early December.

Granny Smith Apples
The Granny Smith variety of apples, which is now recognised right around the world, had its origins right here in Australia. The variety was grown virtually by accident in 1868 by Maria Anne Smith, in the Ryde district of New South Wales. The fruit has a greenish yellow skin colour with hard, crisp and greenish flesh. Granny Smiths are a little more tart in eating quality than red apples and are strongly recommended for cooking as they hold their texture and flavour once cooked. Granny Smith apples are readily available all months of the year.

Pink Lady
The Pink Lady variety originated in Western Australia by crossing Golden Delicious and Lady William varieties . Pink Ladies are now an increasingly popular variety around the world and are characterised by their true pink colour and smooth texture. The Pink Lady is a crisp apple with an eating flavour similar to a Golden Delicious. Many have said that the Pink Lady variety is a great desert quality eating apple, and versatile enough to use in baking as well. Pink Ladies are available from the end of May through to the middle of October.

Red Delicious Apples
The Red Delicious is the most recognised variety in Australia and one for which the Batlow area is famous. The variety has its origins in the 1880’s in America from rootstock near Iowa . It then moved on to England around 1812, before expanding throughout the rest of the world. The colour of Red Delicious can be either dark crimson red, or greenish yellow colour with red stripes. A Red Delicious has a crisp, firm, white flesh with an excellent sweet and juicy eating quality. Red Delicious are the most plentiful in terms of availability throughout the year.

(Royal) Gala Apples
Originated in New Zealand by crossing Golden Delicious and Kidd's Orange varieties. It was referred to as Royal Gala after Queen Elizabeth II declared her preference for it. Galas have a slightly sweeter taste than ordinary Red Delicious and are of a more dense, crisp texture. Galas are available from March through to July.

Sundowner Apples
The Sundowner variety originated in Western Australia, by crossing Lady William and Golden Delicious varieties. Sundowners have a colour ranging between greenish red to full red, and have what is called russet (similar to a yellowy green pimple effect) around the stem of the apple. This does not take away from the apple, its shelf life or quality-it is naturally occurring. The Sundowner apple is not as firm as other varieties, but is flavoursome in its eating, with an excellent sugar content. Sundowners are available from the middle of May through to the end of November.
